When I graduated in 1978, fewer than 10% of optometrists were women.
The script wasn’t written for us.
The doors weren’t open.
And the odds? They weren’t in our favor.
But every great movie begins with resistance. Banks said no. Practices hesitated. The industry doubted.
And yet… the story didn’t end there.
Because every main character reaches a moment—where she decides…
I will not be written out of this story.
So, I built. From nothing.
With debt, doubt, and determination.
But I was never alone in that climb.
Because behind my career—quietly, powerfully—It was my father.
He didn’t run the practice.
He didn’t sign the loans.
But he built something even more important—
Me.
He taught resilience before I knew I would need it. He modelled strength before I understood its value. He believed in a future for me… before I could see it myself.
Every risk I took…
every barrier I pushed through…
Every moment I stood my ground in a male-dominated profession—
He was there.
Not in the spotlight…
But in the foundation.
And here’s the truth
they don’t tell you:
No great story is ever a solo performance.
There are always supporting actors.
The mentor who takes a chance on you. The colleague who believes in your vision. The staff who stand beside you when the hours are long. The patients who trust you… with something as precious as sight.
And then—
My husband.
He stepped out of his own spotlight… so I could stand in mine.
For 40 years…
we built something together.
Not just practices. Not just success.
A life.
And like every great film…
there were cliffhangers.
Not just in business—but in life.
Personal struggles. Exhaustion. Moments of doubt no one sees. Balancing roles—doctor, owner, mother, partner. Wondering if you could keep all the pieces together.
Moments where the music swells… and you don’t know how the scene will end.
But the story continues…
because the cast is strong.
Because the vision is shared.
Because the purpose is bigger than you.
And then…
The plot thickens.
Not gradually. Not gently.
But suddenly.
Without warning…
the script changes.
On May 1st… my husband—my partner of 40 years—was gone.
No rehearsal. No rewrite.
No second take.
Just silence.
And in that moment… everything I thought was ahead of me…was suddenly behind me.
This is the part of the movie no one prepares you for.
The scene where life interrupts the plan.
Where succession is no longer a strategy… but a decision you must make… now.
And I did.
Shortly after his passing…
I sold the practices.
Not because I had to…
but because it was time.
Time for a new act. A new stage. A different role in the story.
Because sometimes courage isn’t holding on.
Sometimes…
It’s knowing when to turn the page.
And yet…
Even in the darkest scenes…
Something extraordinary happened.
The supporting cast stepped forward.
My staff. My associates.
My patients. My friends.
And even complete strangers.
People who didn’t have to…
but chose to.
They showed up. They held me up. They reminded me…
that this story was never mine alone.
One year later… to the exact date…
I could see it clearly.
This was never just about building practices.
It was about building people.
Building relationships.
Building something that could stand… even when you could not.
And that…
is the greatest role we will ever play.
Not the doctor. Not the owner. Not the title.
But the difference-maker.
The one who changes lives— patient by patient…
person by person…
through every act of the story.
